Seasonal Public Works

Under general supervision the Seasonal Public Works workers perform park maintenance work of average difficulty and other duties as assigned. The Seasonal Maintenance Worker I position is to be considered the Laborer Position, but not limited to operating a variety of light equipment.

Available for weekend duty throughout the summer months required.

1. Operate a variety of light equipment in park construction and maintenance
2. Operate a variety of light mowing equipment
3. Repair and maintain all parks, playground and athletic fields
4. Perform general maintenance on the equipment
5. Be available for emergency duties as per Public Works Director
6. Maintenance of flower beds, hanging baskets
7. Cleaning of park shelters
8. Perform all other related work as required or assigned

Education and experience

• High school diploma or working towards high school diploma or G.E.D equivalent
• Minimum 16 years or older

Other required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Valid MN Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements
• Ability to bend, lift and perform strenuous exercise
• Be available to assist other areas of the department in emergency situations or on an as needed basis.
• Ability to work effectively with little direction and supervision.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to communicate and work effectively and professionally with co-workers and the public.

EQUIPMENT USED

• Operate a variety of light equipment and including pickup trucks, workman’s and lawn maintenance equipment

MENTAL & PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS

• Significant attention to safety standards, procedures, and practices
• Calibration and application of fertilizers and pesticides
• Professional and appropriate responsiveness when interacting with the public

• Proper and safe operation of both light and heavy equipment and tools
• Varying and some prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, observing, climbing, balancing, and lifting, carrying and moving objects 60+ lbs.
• Ease working at heights or in trenches of 5+ feet in depth
• Driving to and from work sites

• Working outside in all seasons with varying levels of exposure to wind, rain, snow, ice, sun
• Working in busy traffic areas and intersections
• Working within confines of both underground and overhead system structures and construction sites
