Public Works Maintenance I - Streets

The Public Works Maintenance I - Streets position performs all street, public property, park and recreation area maintenance and repairs for the City of Chaska. This includes heavy and light equipment work for roadways, school athletic fields, City cemetery and all municipal parks, trails and green areas.

1. Performs routine maintenance on City’s parks and cemetery, school athletic fields, playgrounds, gazebos, shelters and other City property and related structures.
2. Performs snow removal through use of tractors, trucks, snowplows and snow loaders.
3. Assists with construction activities on City owned property.
4. Applies pesticides and fertilizers and assists with planting of landscaping.
5. Assists in construction of roads, streets and bridges through use of road graders and loaders.
6. Constructs, repairs and maintains hiking and biking trails throughout the City as well as other asphalt roadways.
7. Erects, removes, repairs and maintains street signage throughout the City.
8. Provides monitoring and maintenance of catch basins, pumps, lift stations and other related structures and equipment for the purpose of storm water and flooding control.
9. Maintains equipment and tools used in performance of duties.
10. Assists other departments as needed, holds place in on-call schedule and as municipal employee maintains availability for emergency situations.
11. Performs all other related duties as requested or assigned.

Education and Experience

• High School Diploma or G.E.D
• Previous experience in a municipal maintenance position
• Public Works Certificate desired

• Ability and experience with light equipment
• Class A MN commercial driver’s license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements

• Saws, chainsaws, shovels, sledgehammers, acetylene torches, welders, drills, pumps
• Skid steers, excavators, dump trucks, vibrator compactors, road graders, quipment trailers, air compressors, jack hammers, forklifts, brush mowers, milling machines, air compressors, tractors, irrigation systems
• Lawn mowers, weed whips, woodchipper
• Snow removal equipment including shovels, plows, blowers

• Significant attention to safety standards, procedures, and practices
• Calibration and application of fertilizers and pesticides
• Professional and appropriate responsiveness when interacting with the public

• Proper and safe operation of both light and heavy equipment and tools
• Ease working at heights or in trenches of 5+ feet in depth
• Varying and some prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, observing, climbing, balancing, lifting, carrying, and moving objects 80+ lbs.

• Driving to and from work sites
• Working outside in all seasons with varying levels of exposure to wind, rain, snow, ice, sun
• Working in busy traffic areas and intersections
• Working within confines of both underground and overhead system structures and construction sites
