We fulfill our mission through counseling, education, and advocacy, primarily in the greater Minneapolis and St. Paul area. The Family Partnership was founded in 1878 as the Minneapolis Humane Society to protect and serve children that were being abused or exploited. Along with a few name changes, our work has continually transformed to anticipate and address the evolving needs of families and individuals, many of whom are the most vulnerable in our community.

Wages and Benefits

$130,000 - $150,000 annual salary range; Generous paid time off, plus 10 paid holidays; competitive health, dental, and vision insurance; health savings account (HSA), and options for flexible spending accounts (FSA). There is employer paid basic life insurance with the option for additional coverage paid by the employee. The employer pays for Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) and short and long-term disability insurance. TFP sponsors a retirement plan with a tiered vesting schedule based on years of service, plus a 2% employer contribution after one year of service.

A Typical Day in the Life…

A typical day as The Family Partnership’s Chief Financial Officer provides an opportunity to manage the organization’s operations in finance to promote the financial effectiveness and long-term sustainability of the organization. Responsibilities will include the following:

  • Leading the budget development process and ensuring budgets are balanced and aligned with long-term financial strategies.
  • Developing financial models based on the organization’s mix of revenue resources, including balancing expenses with revenue while generating positive cash flow.
  • Developing analytics that program managers can use to anticipate and improve the financial performance of their programs and services.
  • Monitoring financial performance and ensuring timely and accurate monthly financial statements.
  • Leading the forecasting process.
  • Overseeing the financial department and ensuring compliance with GAAP Accounting, Federal and State laws and regulations, and TFP’s own expectations and guidelines.
  • Establishing and monitoring internal controls for all facets of the department and applicable areas of the organization.
  • Overseeing cash management, including monitoring cash flow and maintaining cash reserves in accordance with TFP policy.
  • Ensuring the monthly close process is properly established and providing oversight as needed.
  • Overseeing risk management activities.
  • Oversee year-end reporting, annual audits, IRS Form 990, and various desk audits. ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Educate and report to the Board of Directors on annual government compliance and monitoring potential areas of risk.
  • Directly supervising a Controller, Grants Contract Specialist and AP/AR Specialist positions.

Who You Are

  • You hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting or a relevant field, or you have demonstrably equivalent knowledge gained through alternative courses of study and life experience.
  • You have a minimum of 10+ years of work experience in an accounting management position.
  • You are an experienced, hands-on finance leader with high ethical standards, sound technical skills, analytical ability, good judgment, and a strong operational focus.
  • You have previous nonprofit financial management experience with government contracts and restricted contributions.
  • You have 5 years of experience managing a finance team and influencing organizational financial leadership.
  • You possess a strong working knowledge of GAAP accounting, along with other areas of operational responsibility.
  • You have a successful track record of working strategically with leadership.
  • You demonstrate the ability to create and assess financial statements, forecasting documents, and budget documents.
  • You are familiar with financial management software, preferably Sage Intaact.
  • You are a well-organized, self-directed individual who works with high personal standards of excellence both independently and as part of a team.
  • You have well-developed abilities to communicate verbally and in writing with audiences ranging from new staff to board leaders to external funders and stakeholders.
  • You have the ability to recognize and be responsive to the needs of all stakeholders of the organization, including funding organizations, the Board of Directors, local community advocates, participants, and staff.
  • You are proficient with general office software, particularly Microsoft Excel.
  • You hold a CPA or CMA designation (inactive CPA designation is acceptable).
  • You have a valid driver’s license, access to reliable transportation, and the ability to meet TFP’s driving record requirements. Please note that if the license was not issued in the state of Minnesota, you have 60 days after becoming a Minnesota resident in which to apply for your Minnesota driver's license or permit (not applicable for new hires living out of state).
